Inspired by the mystery of the Big Island, I have designed this quilt to represent its diversity. The red Anthurium flowers represent the red lava, and the gray background is the smoke and steam created by Madame Pele, who is represented by the piko or center of the quilt. The outer Lei holds the beauty of the anthurium flowers that grow so well on the mountain slopes with the smoke surrounding them and the quilting is the ocean waves that surround the island.
