The Kukui motif represents the Moloka’i tree and flower.
The darker green color was chosen to symbolize the Island of Moloka’i
while the light green signify the Kukui tree whose leaves are a light green.
The oil from the nuts of the Kukui tree, also known as the candle nut tree,
was extracted by the old Hawaiians and used to light their lanterns.
