The taro grows in beds of flowing water and takes a lot of work and care. All parts of the plant are eaten, the tuber roots of the Taro (kalo) plant was boiled and then pounded into poi and was one of the main food staples of the old Hawaiians. The leaves are steamed in the imu (under ground oven) with kalua pig in a Ti leaf wrap and are called "laulau".
